VALPARAISO, Ind. -- A Texas man who took hostages in a northwestern Indiana realty office and held police at bay for several hours suffered three gunshot wounds before dying, likely from two different weapons, a coroner said torday.
Roy L. Ferguson, 48, of Fulshear, Texas, died at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Porter County Coroner Chuck Harris said. That was two hours after the end of the nearly seven-hour standoff at Prudential Executive Group Real Estate office in Valparaiso, about 40 miles southeast of Chicago.
"The likelihood of all three gunshot wounds coming from the same weapon is not good," Harris said. He said that wouldn't be confirmed until an autopsy is performed. It had not yet been scheduled because of Memorial Day weekend.
Valparaiso Police spokesman Sgt. Michael Grennes said Saturday that Ferguson had only one firearm - a handgun. Grennes also said the SWAT officers who rushed inside the office after hearing gunshots at 4:30 p.m. did not fire on Ferguson, but officers exchanged gunfire with Ferguson when the standoff started.
Asked Saturday if police had shot Ferguson, Grennes said, "It's under investigation."
Police received a 911 call around 10 a.m. Friday reporting a man with a gun had entered the brokerage office, Grennes said.
There were fewer than 10 people in the building when the incident began, he said.
One of them was accountant Carolyn Biesen. She was in her office when she heard a commotion near the front desk. Biesen walked out, saw a man standing over her injured co-worker on the ground and yelled at him to leave.
"That's when he pulled his gun out - and pointed it in the air," she told The Associated Press late Friday, several hours after she and several other people were taken hostage.
Biesen, 51, retreated back into her office, locked herself in, shoved a file cabinet in front of the door and called 911. Curled up under her desk, she heard two gunshots, then several more in rapid succession.
Ferguson, police said later, was looking for someone he believed owed him money when he went into the Prudential Executive Group Real Estate office in Valparaiso on Friday morning.
Valparaiso Police Chief Michael Brickner said officers believe Ferguson shot himself twice in the head before SWAT members broke windows and stormed inside less than two hours after the last two hostages had been released unharmed.
"He has some history here," Brickner said of Ferguson.
An ambulance rushed Ferguson to a hospital, where he died, police said.
No hostages reported being shot, though Grennes said one person who was struck in the head was treated and released from a hospital.
Another witness, Randy Baker, said he was in an adjacent parking lot shoveling asphalt when an officer wielding a pistol suddenly ran by and asked if he'd seen or heard anything about a gun. When Baker said he hadn't, the officer approached the building.
Seconds later, the officer began rapidly firing at least half a dozen times, said Baker, who took cover behind his work truck. He said he saw a woman in the Prudential window cowering under an office desk.
"That's what really scared me," Baker said. "And I ran out of there fast."
Mack Elliott, an agent at the brokerage, wasn't in the office Friday but said he spoke with agents who were present. He believes the incident stemmed from a dispute over a real estate transaction.
Biesen, the accountant, said she didn't believe the gunman intended to hurt her.
"If he wanted to, he could have come right into the office - maybe shooting through the door," she said.
Biesen spoke Friday night from her home, where several dozen family members and friends gathered after she had made it out unharmed. Despite the trauma, she said she felt sorry for the gunman, noting he could have decided to surrender after all the hostages were released.

MIRANDOLA, Italy (AP) ? A powerful earthquake has killed at least 15 people and left 200 injured as it rocked a swath of northern Italy. Factories, warehouses and churches collapsed, dealing another blow to a region where thousands are still homeless from a stronger temblor just nine days ago.
The 5.8 magnitude quake drove thousands more from their homes in the Emilia Romagna region north of Bologna, one of Italy's most agriculturally and industrially productive areas.
A senior Italian official said at least seven people were missing and the number of homeless in the region has swelled to 14,000 people.

Sayeeda Warsi said in a statement Sunday that she had made a mistake in how she informed Britain's upper house, of which she is a member, about a west London apartment she rented out. Warsi says the mistake was an oversight and that she takes full responsibility for not following the rules.

State media named the Brotherhood's Mohamed Mursi and former air force chief Ahmed Shafiq as the top two vote-getters in this week's first round of a close-fought election made possible by last year's popular revolt.
Official results are not due until Tuesday to allow the election committee to hear complaints and appeals about the voting. State newspapers cited no source for their vote count, which broadly tallied with previous Brotherhood estimates.
The choice between Mursi and Shafiq, representing forces that have tussled for the past six decades, has dismayed many Egyptians who voted for candidates offering a middle ground.
They fear a victory for the 70-year-old Shafiq, Mubarak's last prime minister, would snuff out hopes of change ignited by the anti-Mubarak uprising, while a win for Mursi would pitch Egypt into an experiment with Islamic rule.
The Brotherhood invited rivals, including losing candidates such as leftist Hamdeen Sabahy and moderate Islamist Abdel Moneim Abol Fotouh, to talks on Saturday aimed at gaining their support for the runoff against Shafiq on June 16 and 17.
Warning of "determined efforts to recreate the old regime", it said parties that supported the uprising against Mubarak must unite "so that the revolution is not stolen from us".
The Brotherhood already holds the biggest bloc in parliament after an election completed in January, but has been unable to assert itself against an army-appointed interim government.
WHO STOLE THE REVOLUTION?
Shafiq used strikingly similar language at a news conference as he addressed youth groups that spearheaded last year's popular uprising.
"Your revolution was stolen," he told them. "I pledge to return its fruits to your hands."
Shafiq said that "the clock cannot be turned back", but that he would not let the country "drown in chaos".
Much of his rhetoric indirectly targeted the Brotherhood, playing on fears among Egypt's minority Christians and secular liberals that a Mursi presidency would threaten their freedoms.
"No exclusion of anyone or distancing of anyone," he declared. "Everyone has a right to be a part of this nation."
On Friday he had told Egyptian television that he saw no problem with the idea of a Muslim Brotherhood-led government if he were elected president.
The generals who took over when Mubarak quit on February 11, 2011, have promised to make way for a new president by July 1, formally ending a messy and often bloody political transition.
But the military, which has supplied all Egypt's previous presidents, is keen to keep its privileges and influence in a new order in which the powers of the president, parliament and government are as yet undefined by a rewritten constitution.
Mursi and Shafiq only narrowly topped the vote on Wednesday and Thursday, in which unofficial results showed less than 8 percentage points separating the top four candidates.
Mursi's 25 percent paled in comparison to the parliamentary election, in which the Brotherhood gained nearly half the seats.
Reform-minded independents such as Abol Fotouh and Sabahy between them won more votes than either Shafiq or Mursi, hinting at the growth of a new centre in Egypt's fluid political scene.
"The Brotherhood will have to reach out in a grand and dramatic way to the centre and the other political parties if they have any hope of winning their support and any hope of winning the presidency," said Elijah Zarwan of the European Council on Foreign Relations think tank.
ANTI-SHAFIQ FRONT?
A Brotherhood party official, Yasser Ali, said the talks to persuade rivals to join an anti-Shafiq front would discuss the vice presidency and a new coalition government.
"We know we will succeed in uniting behind the initiative to save the nation and complete the revolution," Essam el-Erian, deputy head of the Brotherhood's Freedom and Justice Party, told a news conference on Friday.
Long a thorn in Mubarak's flesh, the Brotherhood has looked increasingly isolated from other parties since his fall, first facing accusations it was slow to join the revolt and then that it acquiesced in the military rule that followed.
Trust in the Brotherhood was further undermined when the group decided to join the presidential race, after previously pledging to stay out. The group, founded in 1928, says it is the target of a vicious smear campaign by its opponents.
Abol Fotouh, who won about 17.6 percent of the vote by the Brotherhood's count, has said he will now back the Islamist group with which he split last year to run for president.
He did not name the Brotherhood, but said he and his supporters would "rise above our political and party differences" and would "stand in a united front against the symbols of corruption and oppression".
Shafiq has won support among Egyptians who see him as the kind of strongman the country needs to end 15 months of political instability, economic failure and rising crime.
His constituency also includes Christians, who form about a 10th of Egypt's 82 million people. They complained of discrimination in Mubarak's day, but are likely to vote for Shafiq in preference to an Islamist.
Mohamed Habib, a former deputy leader of the Brotherhood who left the group last year in protest at its post-uprising policies, said the group should offer vice presidential positions to at least two people from outside the group.
He suggested one could be a Christian - an idea to which Mursi himself has said he is not opposed.

The main barriers to hearing aid use are being addressed by experts in Nottingham as part of an innovative research project.
Hearing aids have the potential to transform the lives of those with permanent hearing loss, yet out of the three million people who have one, around 25 per cent 750,000 people choose not to wear their device.
Now researchers are offering easy-to-use, interactive video tutorials offering handy tips and advice in a bid to increase the chances of success for people using their hearing aids for the first time and make the most of their device.
If they are successful, the tutorials could be routinely given to patients receiving hearing aids on the NHS within the next three years.
The project and is being led by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) National Biomedical Research Unit in Hearing (NBRUH) and brings together expertise from researchers and leading clinicians from The University of Nottingham and Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust.
Consultant clinical scientist Mel Ferguson, from Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust, who is leading the study, said: "A huge amount of information is given to patients verbally when they receive their hearing aids, yet much of it is forgotten a few weeks later. Many problems that occur could be easily solved if only the patient knew what to do and often hearing aids end up in the proverbial 'kitchen drawer'."
In addition to issues with retaining the large amount of information given to users at their clinic appointment, there are other significant barriers to hearing aid use before patients even reach the referral stage.
Many hearing aid users have had difficulties in hearing for at least 10 years before they get a hearing aid citing many reasons for not seeking advice. These include perceiving their hearing to be 'not that bad', acceptance of hearing loss as a normal consequence of ageing, lack of awareness of that they may have a hearing loss ('everyone mumbles these days'), lack of understanding of hearing loss and what to do about it, and simply avoiding to address the issue.
In addition, many people who need a hearing aid are not given the referral they need to see a specialist. Just under half (47 per cent) of those with a significant hearing loss in the 55-74 year age group who went to their GP with complaints of hearing loss failed to get an onward referral to audiology services.
The project team has worked with more than 30 hearing aid users to develop eight video tutorials that can be played on a DVD player, computer or via the internet, which provide advice on how best to use hearing aids and communicate with family and friends.
The tutorials reinforce information and advice given at the clinic appointment and include information, animations, videos and powerful messages from users of hearing aids about their personal experiences.
At the end of each tutorial there is an interactive quiz so the patients can review what they have learned. The tutorials, which total an hour in duration, will also offer friends and family an important insight into how best to support the hearing aid user by developing a better awareness of how best to hold conversations with people with hearing loss.
Anne Darby, an experienced hearing aid user of 30 years, played a key role in providing a patient perspective for the project. She said: "This is a fabulous resource for people receiving their hearing aids for the first time. It explains the mechanics of hearing and how hearing aids work, supports people through the difficulties of adjustment, lets the viewer know that they are not alone, points to other resources and, most of all, is reassuring to the patient and their partners, family and friends."
The team has received a 235,000 NIHR Research for Patient Benefit grant and is now in the process of evaluating the potential benefits of the tutorials. Involving 200 patients, it is expected to find substantial success in terms of better hearing aid use and improved communication with family and friends.
The first hearing aid patient to complete the trial, Hazel Hampton said she was delighted with the tutorials, adding: "If I did not have the DVD I might have given up wearing my hearing aids. Because of the DVD I have entered a much easier self-directing and informative environment, instead of a wild woolly and noisy world. I think the DVD is a well thought out educational resource.'
Dr Gareth Smith, President of the British Academy of Audiology, said: "In the new NHS arena, where evidence-based, clinical innovation is the key to successful service delivery and outcomes for patients, NBRUH are in a fantastic position to spearhead positive change. This award-winning project, simple in design yet so effective in practice, sets the bar for other healthcare professionals to consider how they can follow this example to improve patient out-comes. The challenge has now been set for the audiology profession to incorporate this model of information delivery into everyday practice."

What Do You Need?

Colour
The most popular colours for appliances are by far white, black and stainless steel. No matter what colour you prefer, purchasing all of your appliances in the same colour will give your kitchen a pulled together look. Stainless steel tends to give kitchens a modern look while black and white can lend themselves to all manner of kitchen styles.
Remember that stainless steel and black appliances will cost more money than the same style in a white or bisque finish. If you trust yourself with a can of paint, home improvement stores sell special appliance paint that can transform white appliances into virtually any colour you desire. This may be an option for those wanting higher-end appliances with the not so high cost.
Budget Concerns
You can easily spend tens of thousands of dollars on appliances for your kitchen. If you choose to outfit your kitchen with the latest in appliance design, you should expect to pay anywhere from $1,500 to $5,000 for each appliance. If you are on a tighter budget, consider buying appliances without some of the bells and whistles or choosing the appliance that is the most important to you and splurging on that one.
For instance, if you do a lot of cooking and baking, you may want to concentrate your budget on a top-of-the-line range. If you have a large family, you may want to buy a refrigerator with several compartments, LED lighting and an in-door water and ice dispenser. Decide on a budget for your appliances and then sit down and decide which appliances are the most important to you and how you will divvy your budget among them.

LONDON (AP) ? A prominent British TV presenter said Wednesday that CNN talk show host Piers Morgan gave him a primer on phone hacking, a revelation that suggests he knew a fair amount about how the shady practice was carried out.
BBC quiz show host and television news presenter Jeremy Paxman told a media ethics inquiry that Morgan delivered his warning over lunch at the headquarters of the Mirror newspaper, which he was then editing, in 2002.
Paxman said that Morgan "turned to me and said, 'Have you got a mobile phone?'"
"I said, 'yes,' and he asked if there was a security setting on the message bit of it. ... I didn't know what he was talking about.
"He then explained the way to get access to people's messages was to go to the factory default setting and press either 0000 or 1234 and that if you didn't put on your own code, (in) his words, 'You're a fool.'"
Paxman testified before Lord Justice Brian Leveson, who is sifting through the fallout of the scandal over unethical and illegal behavior at Rupert Murdoch's News of the World newspaper, which Morgan briefly edited before moving to the Mirror.
Journalists at the now-defunct tabloid routinely hacked phones to get stories, bypassing weak security to illegally eavesdrop on private conversations of politicians, celebrities, sports stars, and other public figures.
The scandal that erupted when the full extent of such practices was exposed last year has rocked Britain's establishment, leading to the arrest of dozens of people and casting a harsh light on relations among the press, politicians, and the police.
Morgan testified before Leveson late last year, suggesting he'd only been aware of phone hacking in general terms.
Quizzed repeatedly about statements he'd made suggesting that many in the British newspaper business were involved in phone hacking, Morgan claimed that he'd merely been repeating gossip he picked off the industry's rumor mill.
"I wasn't aware that it was widely prevalent in any specific form," he said in December, going on to explain that he was unaware of the details of what British journalists nicknamed "the dark arts." The CNN star has repeatedly denied having ever hacked a phone or knowingly run material obtained by phone hacking.
Morgan didn't immediately answer questions about Paxman's testimony sent via email, but he took to Twitter to make light of the development.
"Right ? that's the last time I'm inviting Jeremy Paxman to lunch," Morgan wrote. "Ungrateful little wretch."
Links between media and senior politicians are expected to come under scrutiny on Thursday, when the disgraced former aide to Olympics Secretary Jeremy Hunt, Adam Smith, is due to testify before Leveson. Smith resigned after email and text messages published by the inquiry showed him exchanging too-friendly emails with Murdoch lobbyist Frederic Michel, who was pressing Hunt's department to help ease the media mogul's multi-billion pound (dollar) bid for U.K. satellite broadcaster BSkyB.
Michel is also due to testify Thursday. Hunt's most senior civil servant, Jonathan Stephens, is due to testify Friday. Hunt is due to testify separately at a later date.
