Washington nearing decisions on American League All-Star rosters

On-line voting for the All-Star Game ended on Thursday night. Results from the manager-coach-player voting are in house. That allows Texas Rangers manager Ron Washington to enter the final stage of filling out the American League All-Star team.

The fan voting determines the nine position-player starters, including designated hitter. The manager-coach-player voting will determine a backup at each spot other than pitcher along with eight pitchers: five starters and three backups. The final spot on the 34-man team will be determined by on-line voting among five candidates determined by Washington.

Washington will have seven choices. If form holds, he will have to ?use four of the picks to get the mandatory representative from clubs ignored in the voting. A year ago, the spurned four clubs were Baltimore, Kansas City, Minnesota and Oakland. Seattle could replace Baltimore, which has a strong candidate in closer Jim Johnson.

That would leave three wild-card picks again for Washington. A year ago, he had three choices and used each on a pitcher: Detroit closer Jose Valverde, Tampa Bay starter David Price and C.J. Wilson, then with the Rangers.

96% First Position

All Critics (50) | Top Critics (21) | Fresh (48) | Rotten (2)

A number of the performances are plain stunning - Aran and Joan, in particular, seem born to move - and in many ways watching the movie is like watching a sporting event; there are winners and losers and favorites to cheer on.

It's an intense journey, and Kargman captures it all, down to the dancers' bloodied and bruised feet.

Yes, it is possible to create a gripping documentary about the ballet world without resorting to "Black Swan" melodramatics.

Because its subjects are so driven and so talented, "First Position," which is about ballet, is more gripping than the norm.

It's in the quick audience-reaction shots of the young dancers' exultant parents and cringing private instructors that the movie finds its most nakedly human moments.

The film shows the grueling work it takes for young dancers like Zamora to look effortless on stage, and First Position shows teachers who range from supportive to borderline abusive.

Far from the dutiful progeny of "Dance Moms," these are individuals of uncommon skill, self-knowledge, maturity and drive. They're the real deal. And so is First Position.

All of the dollars and expertise that produced this summer's blockbusters could never produce a spectacle as wondrous as 11-year-old Aran Bell dancing his heart out.

Kargman ... brings a welcome empathy to this programmatic film that follows six hopefuls as they compete in something called the Youth America Grand Prix, which we're told is the most comprehensive ballet competition in the world.

The children are almost unearthly in their agility and elegance -- until they remove their shoes, and reveal their all-too-human abrasions and injuries.

It's a wealth of material at odds with a scant running time and shallow focus.

When it's over, you won't remember so much about who won and who lost. Instead, what remains is the expression on a young dancer's face, reflected in a mirror: showing the joy of being in love with what you do.

What we experience is the overwhelming thrill of the competition and the true agony of defeat.

It could very well compete for Best Documentary at next year's Academy Awards.

For someone (like me) who has never been to a ballet, the talent of these teens and tweens is a revelation.

It's 'Spartacus' en pointe.

Inspiring documentary about hardworking young dancers.

Almost loses its sense of good taste entirely in the final act, straining to build suspense and shape heroes. The bias hangs a little ugly in an otherwise passable, somewhat enlightening effort.

The cookie cutter format Kargman uses in presenting her subjects may be unoriginal but a safe way to introduce the filmmaker to her new audience.

Child ballet dancer and former journalist Bess Kargman brings a dancer's passion and insight to her directorial debut, illuminating the addictive magic and fierce demands of a ballet dancer's life.

Really, all of the dancers' evident passion for their art is, well, spellbinding.

These kids are proud of their tights.

Why Nasty Gal Landed Venture Capital Funding | Pham Capital

Nasty Gal?s Sophia Amoruso: Fashion?s New Phenom

How To Get A Venture Capitalist To Back Your Napkin

The VC model is not broken. It?s just working too well. (Part I)

This is a guest post by Danny Rimer of Index Ventures.

It seems so appropriate now, given the nature of the company?s success story, that I first heard about Nasty Gal through word-of-mouth?as Martin Mignot, a colleague based in Index?s London office, told me about them. Martin?s girlfriend, Therese, frequented the site. Intrigued by the company?s brand appeal, Martin set up a call with Sophia Amoruso, Nasty Gal?s founder. After that first meeting, Martin told me that I really had to connect with Sophia myself?as soon as possible.

I vividly remember our first call. Sophia was in the middle of a hectic day. Speaking from her car, en route to Nasty Gal?s distribution center to check in on the status of some important shipments, she was also about to fire a senior member of her team.

I was struck by how measured her tone was as she recounted her day. When I asked for Nasty Gal?s financials, I was blown away, again struck by how matter-of-fact she was in delivering?the?numbers: $28m in revenue in 2011, up from $10 million in 2010, all without outside financing or marketing. I set up a follow-up meeting with her the next week on her trip to the Valley.

We met in the lobby of the Rosewood Hotel and Sophia talked me through her approach to e-tailing. The origin of the Nasty Gal brand was an eBay store that Sophia started in 2006, and I listened to how Sophia?s views about the intersection of e-commerce and fashion had evolved over time, as well as what drove her now.

It became very clear that our views about what was likely to work in the online fashion space were closely aligned. We agreed that e-tailing businesses are predicated on the best of what an offline business has to offer: great product,?great?brand loyalty, and a space to be social as well.?There are a lot of business model innovations in e-tailing right now, like flash sales, daily deals and celebrity endorsements, but the most successful ones have the same attributes as the most successful fashion brands?built purely on the quality of supply and the customer experience. By the end of the meeting, Sophia agreed that I, along with Martin and another colleague Tony Zappala, should spend a day at Nasty Gal?s offices.

I had seen similar types of offices when we first invested in Net-a-Porter and ASOS. But what jumped out at me, visiting Nasty Gal, was how everyone I met with knew what the priorities for the next twelve months were; how hard-working the staff was; and how convincing Sophia had been to bring them on board from retailers with bigger brands.

Afterwards, there wasn?t much of a debate between Tony, Martin and me. Nasty Gal is a?great?opportunity for a venture capitalist to discover: a clever and dedicated entrepreneur, a straightforward business model, and agrowing market filled with opportunity.?Incredibly, the company was built?on the?organic?relationship that Nasty?Gal?cultivated?with its audience.?Girls?visit?the site?for?content?first?a characteristic that major e-tailers aspire to, but one that few have been able to achieve.

We?ve been working with Nasty Gal for close to a year now, and the process has been a new experience for everyone involved. Since Sophia bootstrapped much of the business, many aspects of the next stage of scaling are new to her. On our end, we have committed to a more active form of investment. My colleague, Tony, moved his family to Los Angeles and is temporarily helping her build out a framework for scaling the business. And Sophia is ensuring that the business is growing in line with her vision?which is at the heart of Nasty Gal?s past successes, and which will be just as critical as the company charts its future growth.

Venezuela to propose OPEC oil price band

CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) ? Venezuela is proposing that OPEC adopt a band of prices for crude oil and hopes to return to prices of about $100 a barrel, the country's oil minister said Thursday.

Venezuela has proposed a price band of between $80 and $120 per barrel, but it remains to be seen in discussions among OPEC members what the range of permissible prices would be, Oil Minister Rafael Ramirez told reporters.

After he spoke, the price of oil hit an eight-month low as hopes dimmed for a solution to Europe's financial crisis. Benchmark U.S. crude lost $2.52, or 3.1 percent, to end at $77.69 per barrel in New York trading.

"The market must be protected from instability," Ramirez said. "We're talking about a band that has a ceiling and has a floor."

He said Venezuela is aiming for "an average price of $100 a barrel."

He said the South American country's government hopes there will be consensus within the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries in order to stabilize prices.

Math formula leads researchers to source of pollution

ScienceDaily (June 25, 2012) ? The leaking of environmentally damaging pollutants into our waters and atmosphere could soon be counteracted by a simple mathematical algorithm, according to researchers.

Presenting their research June 26, in IOP Publishing's journal Inverse Problems, the researchers, from Universit? de Technologie de Compi?gne, believe their work could aid efforts to avoid environmental catastrophes by identifying the exact location where pollutants have been leaked as early as possible.

In the event of an oil spill across a region of the sea, researchers could collect samples of pollutants along certain sections of the body of water and then feed this information into their algorithm.

The algorithm is then able to determine two things: the rate at which the pollutant entered the body of water and where the pollutant came from.

This isn't the first time that mathematical algorithms have been used to solve this problem; however, this new approach is unique in that it could allow researchers to 'track' the source of a pollutant if it is moving or changing in strength.

Co-author of the study, Mr Mike Andrle, said: "In the unfortunate event of a pollutant spill, either by purposeful introduction into our waters or atmosphere, or by purely accidental fate, collaboration with scientists and engineers and application of this work may save precious moments to avert more environmental damage."

The algorithm itself is modelled on the general transport of a pollutant and takes three phenomena into account: diffusion, convection and reaction.

Diffusion is where the pollutant flows naturally from high concentrations to low concentrations and convection is where other factors cause the pollutant to displace, such as a current in the sea. A pollutant may also react with other materials in the water or settle on a seabed or lake floor: this is classified as 'reaction'.

The researchers add that other terms could also be added into the algorithm to account for the properties of different pollutants; for example, oil may not dissolve entirely in water and may form droplets, in which case the buoyancy and settling would need to be accounted for.

Their theoretical results have already shown that the result is unique; that is, the solution found is the only possible one given the observable data. The results were also shown to be very robust, which is extremely important in practice where such measurements often have relatively large errors associated with them.

Mr Andrle continued: "Growing up on Lake Erie, I heard of the previous shape it had been in where industry resulted in much of the lake being declared dead at one time. Though I was not alive to see it at its worst, I did witness how lots of legislation and new policies had turned its fate around.

"I saw a chance to contribute to research that may help mitigate causes of similar future events. We hope that the results of this work are substantially circulated so that those involved in pollution spill localisation and clean-up are aware of this solution."

The paper's second author, Professor Abdellatif El-Badia, said: "Inverse problems are very important in science, engineering and bioengineering. It is very interesting that we've been able to apply this topic to the very big problem of pollution."

Rain from Tropical Strom Debby drenches Florida

MIAMI (AP) ? Tropical Storm Debby spun drenching rains Monday over northern Florida as it hung nearly stationary over the Gulf of Mexico, making its biggest threat flooding rather than winds.

Tropical storm warnings were in effect along the Florida Panhandle as the storm parked offshore. Even with the storm's center far from land, it lashed Florida with heavy rains and spawned isolated tornadoes that killed at least one person.

And in Alabama, crews planned to continue searching for a South Carolina man who disappeared in rough surf Sunday afternoon. The man, whose name and hometown were not immediately released, was vacationing with his family when he went underwater around 1:45 p.m. Sunday, said Melvin Shepherd, director of beach safety for Orange Beach, Ala.

The storm also prompted the closing of a bridge to St. George Island, popular vacation island in Florida.

Residents in several counties near the crook of Florida's elbow were urged to leave low-lying neighborhoods because of the threat of flooding. High winds forced the closure of an interstate bridge that spans Tampa Bay and links St. Petersburg with areas to the southeast. In several locations, homes and businesses were damaged by high winds authorities believe were from tornadoes.

Authorities in the Tampa Bay area were asking residents and tourists to stay away from flooded streets. Some streets were still under water early Monday, while others were blocked with debris.

The constant barrage of wind and rain triggered fears of the widespread flooding that occurred across the Florida Panhandle during Hurricane Dennis in 2005. Officials on Monday said the main bridge to St. George Island was closed as the storm loomed. Power was already out on the island and authorities said it could be out for days.

As of 8 a.m. EDT Monday, Debby's center was essentially stationary about 90 miles (145 kilometers) south-southwest of Apalachicola, Fla. Debby's top sustained winds were around 50 mph (85 kph) with little change in strength expected over the next day or so. The forecast map indicated the storm could inch forward through the week, eventually coming ashore over the Panhandle. However, a storm's path is difficult to discern days in advance.

Underscoring the unpredictable nature of tropical storms, forecasters discontinued a tropical storm warning Sunday afternoon for Louisiana after forecast models indicated Debby wasn't likely to turn west. At one point, forecasters expected the storm to come ashore in that state.

"There are always going to be errors in making predictions. There is never going to be a perfect forecast," said Chris Landsea, a meteorologist at the National Hurricane Center.

A major concern will be flooding from heavy rainfall. The storm is moving slowly, allowing its clouds more time to unload rain. A public advisory said parts of northern Florida could get 10 to 15 inches of rain, with some areas getting as much as 25 inches.

The Highlands County Sheriff's Office said in a news release that several tornadoes moved through the area southeast of Tampa, damaging homes.

Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Nell Hays said a woman was found dead in a house in Venus that was destroyed in the storm. A child found in the same house was taken to the hospital. No further information was available on the child's condition or either person's age.

Authorities urged residents to leave low-lying neighborhoods in Franklin, Taylor and Wakulla counties because of flooding. Shelters were open in the area.

Wind tore the roof off a marina in St. Pete Beach, and a pier was heavily damaged, said Tom Iovino, a Pinellas County government spokesman. He said no injuries were reported.

As of Sunday, 23 percent of oil and gas production in the region had been suspended, according to a government hurricane response team. Employees have been evacuated from 13 drilling rigs and 61 production platforms in the Gulf of Mexico.

The storm was not expected to result in higher oil and gas prices.

"It's largely a non-event for oil," said Tom Kloza, chief oil analyst at the Oil Price Information Service.

Fujifilm outlines XPro1 lens roadmap, brings zoom at last this fall

If there's been one outstanding gripe with Fujifilm's X-Pro1 camera, it's been the absence of zoom lenses; short of French kissing the subject, you might not get the photos you want. While there isn't much of a solution right this second outside of buying the fixed-lens X10, the Japanese camera designer can say when we'll see an interchangeable XF-mount zoom lens: fall 2012. That's when a bright 18-55mm, f/2.8-4.0 optically stabilized lens will make its appearance, along with a 14mm f/2.8 prime. Fujifilm will revert to unveiling nothing but pancakes and primes during early 2013, but the middle of that year will finish covering the zoomable basics through a wide-angle 10-24mm f/4.0 OIS lens and a 55-200mm, f/3.5-4.8 OIS telephoto. We wouldn't expect pricing with the new glass still months away -- but at least you can start planning that Sumatra vacation knowing you won't have to chase down the wildlife to get a good keepsake shot.

Why Are Startups Flocking To SF? There?s No More Room In Silicon Valley

image (1)A lot has been written about the real estate turf war between San Francisco and Silicon Valley. Most point out that many of the developers these companies target live in the city. The nightlife, walkability, and culture are identified as reasons for the trend. But if the heart of Silicon Valley is losing its allure to startups, why is there no real estate space available? The answer is that Silicon Valley is as hot as ever and here's why. The basic premise of these reports is that San Francisco is winning the startup real estate battle right now as companies like Zynga, Twitter, and AirBnB are choosing to put down big roots in the city. This trend is not new to the Valley. Downtown Palo Alto has been ground zero through numerous growth cycles, including this one.

Kansas revokes doctor's license in abortion case

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) ? Kansas regulators on Friday revoked the medical license of a doctor accused of performing inadequate mental health exams on young patients she then referred to the late Dr. George Tiller for late-term abortions.

The State Board of Healing Arts ratified an administrative judge's earlier decision to strip Dr. Ann Kristin Neuhaus of her license. Neuhaus provided second opinions that Tiller needed under Kansas law to perform some late-term abortions at his Wichita clinic. Tiller, one of a few U.S. physicians known to perform abortions in the final weeks of pregnancy, was shot to death in May 2009 by a man professing strong anti-abortion views.

The administrative judge concluded in February that Neuhaus performed inadequate mental health exams in 2003 on 11 patients, aged 10 to 18. The judge said Neuhaus' records didn't contain the information necessary to show that she did thorough exams, and the patients' care was "seriously jeopardized."

"Her actions clearly show a disregard for her patients' safety and care, which causes her to be a threat to any future patients she might have," said Reese Hays, the attorney on the board's litigation team who presented the case against Neuhaus.

Neuhaus has argued that her exams met accepted standards of care, and some abortion rights supporters questioned whether she could receive a fair hearing from the board, with Republican Gov. Sam Brownback, a strong abortion opponent, in office for almost 18 months. Neuhaus said she'll ask the state's courts to overturn the board's decision.

"It's all about abortion rights, absolutely," she said after the board's decision. "If this wasn't in the Bible Belt, I think this wouldn't even be happening."

Abortion opponents have been a force in the Republican Party in GOP-leaning Kansas for two decades and have solid legislative majorities. Since Brownback took office in January 2011, the state has imposed tighter restrictions on abortion, written special health and safety rules for abortion providers and limited private health insurance coverage for elective abortions.

Neuhaus, who is from Nortonville, a small town about 30 miles north of Lawrence, has an inactive medical license that allows her to provide limited charity care, but she had asked the board to reinstate her to a full, active license. The revocation will formally take effect when the board puts its decision in writing and delivers a copy to Neuhaus, possibly next week.

The board discussed her case in closed sessions for about 30 minutes before reconvening to formally revoke her license as Neuhaus and her attorneys watched. Sitting behind her was Troy Newman, president of the anti-abortion group Operation Rescue, which pursued a complaint against her.

The case centered on how Neuhaus concluded that each of the 11 patients had serious mental health issues and that an abortion was advisable. The law required Tiller to obtain an independent second opinion that a patient faced significant and permanent harm if the pregnancy continued. Neuhaus provided such assessments for Tiller from 1999 to 2006.

Neuhaus' reports for him, compiled with a "PsychManager Lite" computer program, were five pages or less and don't cite details from patients' statements or data gleaned from her exams.

The administrative judge said that in some cases, the young patients were described as suicidal, but Neuhaus didn't recommend further treatment. The judge said Neuhaus simply "answered yes/no questions" using the computer program and assigned whatever diagnosis "the computer gave."

Neuhaus strongly disputes the judge's characterization of how she used the program and testified during a hearing that she sometimes refused to allow abortions to go forward.

She also testified that she didn't put more details in her records to protect patients' privacy. After the hearing, she said she was "unapologetic" for that, noting the Kansas attorney general's office began investigating abortion providers, including Tiller, starting early in 2003, and in 2006, Fox television's Bill O'Reilly strongly criticized Tiller and discussed a few of his patients' cases on his program.

The case stemmed from a 2006 complaint by Cheryl Sullenger, senior policy adviser for Operation Rescue. The anti-abortion group Kansans for Life also had scrutinized Neuhaus for years and raised questions about her activities. Newman said after the hearing that the board's decision "was justified, and this is only on 11 records, not on the countless others she did the exact same thing for."

Neuhaus had performed abortions in Wichita and Lawrence but stopped in 2002. When she provided second opinions for Tiller, Kansas law restricted abortions at or after the 22nd week of pregnancy if the fetus was viable. In those cases, pregnancies could be terminated only if the patient faced death or "substantial and irreversible" harm to "a major bodily function," including mental health. Legislators tightened the law last year so that it no longer includes the mental health exception.

Tiller once faced misdemeanor criminal charges that alleged, in relying on Neuhaus for referrals, that he wasn't getting the independent second medical opinion required by state law. He was acquitted two months before his murder, but at the time of his death, a separate complaint was pending before the Board of Healing Arts.

5 Benefits of Martial Arts as Daily Exercise to Avoid Anxiety ...

By?Ryan Rivera ?-

How Martial Arts Affects Anxiety

A woman experiencing anxiety

? Ooi Hong Kiong

All exercise has benefits for anxiety, but martial arts can be particularly valuable, especially if you take the activity seriously and do it every day. Some of these benefits include:

Perhaps the greatest effect that martial arts has on anxiety is that it is a tool to give you control over yourself and your surroundings. Those that learn martial arts learn discipline, and that discipline affects more than simply the movements within MA itself. That control allows you to handle your emotions in your day to day life as well, keeping you calm and focused rather than letting your mind and thoughts scatter.

It?s easy to forget how much confidence also affects your ability to control your anxiety. When you?re confident in yourself, then you know that you?ll be able to more easily handle any events that life may throw at you. It?s not always about controlling all of your anxious thoughts. Rather, it?s about experiencing less of a feeling of ?flight? when faced with a stressful situation. Martial arts provides this confidence, so that rarely will you feel there are things you cannot handle.

When you do experience a stressful day, MA is a great way to relieve much of that stress. In a controlled and safe environment, you have an opportunity to release much of that stressful energy. Any aggression you have inside you is used as a tool, rather than a hindrance. You harness it, and allow the energy to fuel your MA sequences and bouts, brining that energy outside of your body so that it isn?t being held back.

Not all anxiety is caused by your thoughts. In fact, in most Americans, one of the leading causes of anxiety is simply excess physical energy. As a result of the mind/body connection, that energy is then turned into anxiety, because your body has no other form of release. Martial arts uses all of your muscles and tires each of them out. Any anxiety caused by excess muscular energy goes away, and you?re left with a calmer body and a calmer mind.

  • Healthy Social Experience

Finally, one of the most often forgotten benefits of MA as an anxiety reduction tool is that you?re always with at least one other person, performing actions that are healthy and productive. With today?s busy and complex lifestyle, this time that you spend surrounded by other people of similar interests is incredibly healthy ? a type of social environment that few people normally have an opportunity to fit into their schedules. It?s a 100% healthy coping strategy that takes your mind off the troubles of the day, and the benefits of that should not be overlooked.

Using MA to Relieve Anxiety

In addition to the benefits outlined above, all forms of exercise also burn stress hormones and increase endorphins ? the body?s natural pain killers. Combine those benefits with all of the advantages outlined above, and you?ll see why MA is such a powerful way to reduce your daily anxiety and stress. As long as you put effort into your martial arts practices, you?ll find that your anxiety melts away.

Study shows stagnating life expectancies in US

Thursday, June 21, 2012

Despite modest gains in lifespan over the past century, the United States still trails many of the world's countries when it comes to life expectancy, and its poorest citizens live approximately five years less than more affluent persons, according to a new study from Rice University and the University Colorado at Boulder.

The study, "Stagnating Life Expectancies and Future Prospects in an Age of Uncertainty," used time-series analysis to evaluate historical data on U.S. mortality from the Human Mortality Database. The study authors reviewed data from 1930 through 2000 to identify trends in mortality over time and forecast life expectancy to the year 2055. Their research will be published in an upcoming issue of Social Science Quarterly.

Although the researchers found that the U.S. can expect very moderate gains in coming years (less than an additional three years through 2055), the U.S. still trails its developed counterparts in life expectancy. For example, the average life expectancy in the U.S. for a person born today is is 78.49, which is significantly lower than people born in Monaco, Macau and Japan, which have the three highest life expectancies (89.68, 84.43 and 83.91 years, respectively). In addition, the most deprived U.S. citizens tend to live five years less than their more affluent countrymen, according to Justin Denney, Rice assistant professor of sociology, who was principal author for the study.

Denney said that in 1930, average life expectancy in the United States was 59.85. By 2000, it rose to 77.1 years. "But when broken down, these numbers show that those gains were mostly experienced between 1930 the 1950s and 1960s," he said. "Since that time, gains in life expectancy have flattened out.

"During periods of expansion in length of life, a similar expansion has occurred between more and less advantaged groups ? the rich get richer, the poor get poorer, inequality grows and life expectancy is dramatically impacted," Denney said. "And despite disproportionate spending on health care, life expectancy in the U.S. continues to fall down the ladder of international rankings of length of life. It goes to show that prosperity doesn't necessarily equal long-term health."

Denney said many of the chronic conditions that have led to smaller gains in life expectancy are more easily treated when people are more financially stable. He said the study shows "the ugly side of inequality," and he hopes it will draw attention to the fact that more needs to be done to address stagnating life expectancies in the U.S. and eliminate inequalities in the U.S.

"Even in uncertain times, it is important to look forward in preparing for the needs of future populations," Denney said. "The results presented here underscore the relevance of policy and health initiatives aimed at improving the nation's health and reveal important insight into possible limits to mortality improvement over the next five decades."

Andy Samberg And Jay Leno Shared An Impromptu And Passionate Kiss On 'The Tonight Show' (VIDEO)

Recently departed "Saturday Night Live" castmember Andy Samberg certainly got some attention during his Class Day speech at Harvard last month. He had the students cracking up with a bit where he planted an emotional kiss on one male student. After talking about it on "The Tonight Show" (Weeknights, 11:35 p.m. ET on NBC) with Jay Leno, things suddenly got intense.

With the music swelling behind them, Leno and Samberg recreated -- sort of -- that passionate kiss. It turned out to be just as well-received -- and hilarious -- on "The Tonight Show" set as it was at Harvard. Turns out straight man-on-man kissing out of the blue is funny anywhere and at any time. Plus, it's kind of a signature move for Samberg.

Leno's next guest, "Family Guy" creator Seth MacFarlane, wasn't having any of it. He made it very clear when he came out.

"I'm not going to kiss you," he said, before he even finished sitting down.

Andy Samberg can be seen in "That's My Boy," in theaters now. "The Tonight Show" airs weeknights at 11:35 p.m. ET on NBC.

Bari Zell Weinberger, Esq.: House Rules: 5 Tips To Being Divorced And Still Living Together

Ron and Mary both live in the same split-level ranch they bought as newlyweds in 1995. But the problem is that Ron and Mary are not newlyweds anymore -- or even married. The couple divorced in 2011 but remain living together as platonic roommates for financial reasons. Ron has been unable to find work after being laid off when his company downsized in 2010 and the mortgage on their house is underwater by more than $100,000, thanks to a home equity loan that the couple took out at the height of the real estate boom in 2007. When asked if they are living under the same roof because they hope for a turnaround in their relationship, the answer from each is emphatic "no". What Ron and Mary are really hoping for is a new job and a turnaround in the housing market so that they can move on with their lives.

As America's economic recovery continues at what feels like a very sluggish pace, more and more ex-spouses like Ron and Mary are making the jump from marriage partners to housemates. But this begs the rather obvious question: how can you live with someone you divorced and not be at each other's throats?

Life -- and that includes divorce -- can throw you some pretty major curve balls. Willing to make some compromises? If you find yourselves in Ron and Mary's shoes, it may be possible to make this work -- for the short term. Here are five post-divorce cohabitation "house rules" to make life easier until you are out on your own:

1. Plan out who pays for what. Financial issues are among the top factors leading to divorce in the first place, so it's logical they'd be a major cause of conflict as you transition into "housemates." Sit down with your spouse -- and maybe with a divorce mediator -- to identify the key shared financial obligations. If you make similar income, it makes sense to split shared costs (mortgage, property taxes, insurance, electricity and so forth) down the middle. But if one spouse would struggle to meet their obligations if the bills are divided 50-50, you may need to negotiate an agreement where the spouse shouldering the larger portion of the load has that taken into account when dividing up assets after you stop living together. This arrangement can be formalized as part of a divorce settlement and/or through a post-nuptial agreement.

2. Practice basic roommate etiquette... and then some. Channel your mother's advice and pick up after yourself, wash your own dishes, ask before eating food you didn't buy, refrain from camping in the bathroom and so on. Nothing is likely to inflame tensions -- which may already be high -- more than a lack of consideration. Particularly if this was an issue in your marriage, inconsiderate behavior will only make your post-marital home life harder. Bottom line is respect each other.

3. Don't bring home new romantic partners. Is there anything more humiliating than stepping in the front door to find your ex on a romantic date in your own home? Ignoring such boundaries will only make your living situation more difficult. It's fine to date if you are so inclined -- but discretion is key.

4. ...And don't look to your spouse to be your part-time snugglebunny, either. It can be very easy to fall into old habits -- and into bed -- if you're both feeling vulnerable and lonely. But it's not fair to either one of you. If you want someone to cuddle, get a teddy bear... but leave your ex out of it.

5. Move on, even if you can't move out. Cohabiting after divorce stops the natural transition from couple hood to single status. It's easy to stay in a comfort zone and tough to shake things up. It's important to make a conscious effort to spend time in places other than your home, so that when you're able to move on financially, you'll have already gotten there emotionally.

There are, of course, situations where it is best to move out. If children are involved, this "roommates only" situation may just add another level of confusion to an already distressing situation, especially if arguments and flare ups routinely occur. If there is a history of domestic abuse in your home, living in a safe house until you get back up on your feet is better than the alternative of living with an abuser, no matter how much practical financial sense it seems to make at the time.

And what about the house? Even if you owe on your mortgage more than what the asset is worth right now, there still may be a way out. Talk to a real estate agent who is experienced enough to help you "short sell" your home. Sometimes banks are willing to accept a much lower selling price if certain conditions are met (i.e., you can show that housing prices in your area have dropped or you demonstrate proof of economic hardship).

Most of all, no matter what arrangement you finally decide on, remember a great truth: Whether it is an up economy or down economy, this too shall pass.
