Marine doing 1 million pushups to help wounded veterans

South Florida Marine Sergeant Enrique Trevino is attempting to do one million push-ups in an effort to raise money and awareness for American veterans. WTVJ's Justin Finch reports.

By NBCMiami.com and msnbc.com staff

Florida Marine Sgt. Enrique Trevino is more than halfway to his goal of completing one million push-ups to raise money and awareness for wounded veterans.

"In the very beginning, there were a lot of people who said your body can't handle it," Trevino told NBCMiami.com. "That's their first mistake was telling a Marine you can't do something."

Trevino began his one million push-up pursuit as a New Year's fitness resolution, but soon realized he could turn it into an opportunity to help the Wounded Warriors Project. The organization helps veterans of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, where Trevino himself has served, get reacquainted into post-military life.

He said not all vets return with wounds that one can easily see.

"People who are suffering from PTSD. Those are scars that are not seen, but people don't notice everyday," Trevino pointed out. "I'm just trying to bring awareness to those veterans who're transitioning into civilian life, and just make sure they're never forgotten."

Thanks to his push-ups and presence on Facebook and Youtube, Trevino has raised more than $19,000 for his cause. A web page has been set up for people to donate. Still, his sights are set higher.

"My goal is to reach $20,000, but if we can do more than that, which I know we can, I'm all for it," he said.

Last week, Trevino cracked the 500,000 mark, but he said that has not made his push up routine any easier.

"I'd be lying if I said it got easier, but my endurance has gotten better."

China?s Superior Aviation To Buy Hawker Beechcraft

Cheng Shenzong, chairman of Superior Aviation Beijing, at a press conference at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2011 (Photo: Matt Thurber)

Superior Aviation of Beijing, China, has agreed to acquire financially troubled Hawker Beechcraft for $1.79 billion. Under the terms of the ?strategic combination,? Superior Aviation also agrees to make payments over the next six weeks of the ?exclusivity period? to support ongoing jet-related operations as a means of sustaining the jet business until the transaction closes. Since filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in May this year, Hawker Beechcraft had expressed an intent to emerge from bankruptcy as a complete entity. However, the agreement with Superior does not include Hawker Beechcraft Defense Company (HBDC), which would remain a separate entity. HBDC would continue to manufacture the T-6 trainer and pursue certification of its derivative AT-6 light attack aircraft. In the event HBDC is subsequently sold to a buyer acceptable to the U.S. government, up to $400 million of the $1.79 billion purchase price would be refundable to Superior. According to Hawker Beechcraft, Superior intends to maintain the Wichita-based OEM?s existing operations while investing ?substantial capital? in the company and its business and general aviation product line. Hawker Beechcraft further notes that the decision to proceed with Superior came ?after determining that its proposal would create the greatest value for the company and position it for long-term growth.? Hawker Beechcraft CEO Steve Miller pointed out that this acquisition ?would give Hawker Beechcraft greater access to the Chinese business and general aviation marketplace, which is forecast to grow more than 10 percent a year for the next 10 to 15 years.? If negotiations with Superior are not concluded ?in a timely manner,? Hawker Beechcraft plans to proceed with seeking confirmation of the Joint Plan of Reorganization it filed with U.S. Bankruptcy Court on June?30.

Superior Aviation Beijing is the company that bought Superior Air Parts out of bankruptcy in 2010. Its chairman is Cheng Shenzong, and its other holdings include Brantly International, Qingdao Brantly Investment Group, Weifang Freesky Aviation Industry and Qingdao Haili Helicopter?Manufacturing.

Embracing Motherhood ? For Your Marriage

by Donna-Marie Cooper O?Boyle

Servant Books: St. Anthony Messenger Press, Cincinnati, Ohio, 2012; $13.99.

When I gave birth to my first child I lived more than 200 miles from my mother. Frequent phone calls were neither part of our tradition nor feasible in my new family?s budget, so I didn?t have many opportunities to ask my mother for advice. I read Dr Spock, but his book was not my gospel.

My best resource was a friend with one child a year older than mine and a second child on the way. She and her husband belonged to our parish and our Christian Family Movement group, so we exchanged not only child-rearing wisdom but also faith.

As I opened the pages of ?Embracing Motherhood,? by Donna-Marie Cooper O?Boyle, I wondered who today?s busy young mothers go to for advice. Few connect via church groups or neighborhood coffees. Do they find wise women via Facebook or search engines? Does anyone use a printed book anymore for parenting advice?

Who is likely to read ?Embracing Motherhood?? After finishing the book?s final pages, I concluded that the typical reader of this book is apt to be a faithful Catholic woman seeking support, encouragement and ideas for raising children in a devout household.

Donna-Marie Cooper O?Boyle liberally cites Pope John Paul II, especially from his writings about the family. In ?Familiaris Consortio,? the late Holy Father?s 1981 seminal document on the family, he calls the family a ?church in miniature? (?ecclesia domestica?), a domestic church in communion with the diocesan and universal church. John Paul II calls families to ?become what you are,? an ?intimate community of life and love.?

Throughout his pontificate he exhorted family members to fulfill their fourfold mission, a ?specific and original? expression of the church?s mission. Pope John Paul II noted in ?Familiaris Consortio? that respect and love for the family includes giving back ?its reasons for confidence in itself, in the riches that it possesses by nature and grace.?

While Cooper O?Boyle?s message is predominantly encouraging, and she says her book is not about the perfect family, at times she seems to indicate that being church depends upon parents, especially the mother, carrying out ?shoulds,? ?oughts? and ?musts.?

Given the title, it is obvious that ?Embracing Motherhood? has a positive outlook. Its basic concept is excellent, acknowledging that motherhood is not a condition to be endured or perfected but to be embraced, as one embraces a beloved with both arms. Motherhood is a vocation, a sacred calling and a privilege.

Cooper O?Boyle addresses issues important for mothers and explores them from multiple angles. A chapter called ?First and Foremost Educator? is a good example. Its 16 pages address parents? responsibilities to educate their children, contemporary temptations, parental unity, prayerful example, cultural influences and relationships with adult children. As with all the other chapters, this one concludes with a few simple reflection questions and a brief ?homespun? prayer.

At times while reading this book I sensed a tone characterized by a comment opening the book?s second chapter. There the author refers to her own domestic church as ?an oasis to retreat to from the craziness of the world.? Is not the church ??n? the world rather than apart from it, striving to influence society rather than withdraw from it? So also the domestic church, the family, lives in the world and does not retreat from it.

A sheltering home and caring relationships are essential for family health and children?s well-being, which Cooper O?Boyle emphatically conveys in her book. She also states that she is not advocating a return to ?some outdated style of human living? but to ?the roots of human development and human happiness.?

Nurturing a family in this world while fostering our children?s ability to deal successfully with the world?s perils is an art, or what Cooper O?Boyle refers to as ?power and grace.?

MEXICO CITY (AP) ? Mexico's next president has boldly promised to halve the number of kidnappings and murders during his six-year term by moving law enforcement away from showy drug busts and focusing on protecting ordinary citizens from gangs.

Yet Enrique Pena Nieto said remarkably little specific about his anti-crime strategy during the three-month campaign that ended with his still-contested victory in Sunday's election.

That ambiguity has fed fears at home and abroad that Pena Nieto might look the other way if cartels smuggle drugs northward without creating violence in Mexico. Many analysts wonder if Pena Nieto is holding back politically sensitive details of his plans, or simply doesn't know yet how he'll be prosecute the next stage of Mexico's drug war.

Some hints are starting to seep out. A close acquaintance, U.S. Rep. Henry Cuellar of Texas, told The Associated Press that the president-elect has discussed a new offensive against the smaller, local gangs that have cropped up in many Mexican states and earn money through kidnapping and extortion in addition to drug dealing.

President Felipe Calderon's 5 1/2-year war against the big cartels has been criticized by some for fracturing control of territory and smuggling routes, spawning smaller gangs like La Linea in Chihuahua state and La Barredora in the city of Acapulco that view ordinary citizens as their primary source of illicit income.

"In Mexico you have the drug cartels and then you've got regional gangs that are taking advantage of what's happening there," Cuellar said. "That is what he means by reducing the violence: Go after those folks who are actually hurting, assaulting and kidnapping people."

Analysts have said any new focus necessarily means fewer of Mexico's limited resources would go to fighting the biggest smugglers of drugs to the U.S.

But Cuellar, who has met with Pena Nieto several times in the U.S. and Mexico, stressed that the man who will become president Dec. 1 insists he will still target larger organizations such as the Zetas and Sinaloa cartels, the rival groups that have become Mexico's dominant criminal organizations.

"He's told me he's going to go after everybody," Cuellar said. "He said, 'It's the drug cartels and the gangs, and I'm going to reduce the violence.'"

Since Sunday's vote, Pena Nieto has repeatedly promised to continue Calderon's confrontation with cartels, sending messages to both Mexican and U.S. audiences that his new approach will not mean quiet accords with drug gangs in exchange for a reduction in violence that has killed more than 47,500 people since late 2006.

"We will wage an effective fight against the capos, against the heads of the cartels, but clearly also with a rethinking that will allow a lowering of violence," Pena Nieto told a small group of reporters Monday. "There will be no truce, no pact with organized crime."

Pena Nieto's Institutional Revolutionary Party, or PRI, ran Mexico for 71 unbroken years of autocratic rule that ended in 2000, and it was accused of systemic corruption that included payoffs from drug lords in exchange for protection.

Despite Pena Nieto's firm disavowals, many voters said Sunday that they were voting for the PRI in part because they believed its return to power would bring back those backroom deals and reduce violence.

Among those skeptical about a return of the PRI has been U.S. Sen. John McCain of Arizona, who congratulated Pena Nieto on Twitter, followed by: "will be interesting to see how he approaches drug trafficking & other issues of mutual concern."

A day later, Pena Nieto thanked McCain and tweeted his response: "In the struggle against drug trafficking, Mexico's undeniable obligation, we will look for immediate results."

Pena Nieto has signaled that he is open to consideration of new approaches to the drug war, saying during the campaign and again this week that he favors a debate on legalization of drugs, even though he opposes the idea personally.

But so far, Pena Nieto's few concrete proposals point more toward continuity than change.

Since his victory, Pena Nieto has repeated a campaign pledge to build a 40,000-member paramilitary police force that would be dispatched to areas most in the grip of organized crime.

The idea for such a force appears at least partly aimed at assuaging critics of Calderon's overwhelming dependence on Mexican soldiers and marines to confront drug cartels. Rights groups and policing experts say that approach brought human rights violations, an overemphasis on force and delays in building capable civilian police forces.

Pena Nieto's new gendarmes, however, would be largely recruited from the ranks of the armed forces, raising questions about whether the proposal is simply a repackaging of Calderon's use of the military.

The president-elect offered one new detail about the proposed National Gendarmerie on Monday, writing in The New York Times that the force would be deployed specifically to rural areas.

Alejandro Hope, a security analyst and former official in Mexico's CISEN intelligence agency, described the gendarmerie plan as "half-baked." He said it could weaken the armed forces by pulling away experienced troops, and he warned against moving security resources out of violent urban areas where they are badly needed, particularly in deeply troubled border states like Coahuila and Tamaulipas.

"Who's going to be patrolling the streets of Nuevo Laredo, Torreon?" Hope said. "I think they haven't thought through their position."

Pena Nieto also says he wants to increase security spending and nearly double the ranks of the federal police by 35,000 officers, continuing Calderon's strategy of bolstering the national force and using it in places where local law enforcement is weak or corrupt.

And he wants to consolidate Mexico's thousands of notoriously ineffective local police departments with the 31 state forces, another idea proposed but only partially completed under Calderon.

The similarity of Pena Nieto's publicly announced plans to those of his predecessor has fed doubts.

"I'm more and more convinced that they don't really have a blueprint," said Eric Olson, associate director of the Mexico Institute at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars in Washington.

Pena Nieto's record as governor of the State of Mexico, which adjoins Mexico City, also points to the likelihood of continuity in the national drug war. His term saw aggressive policing against organized crime, but unremarkable results in the numbers of violent crimes.

In a move widely seen as a gesture to reassure the U.S. of his commitment to the war on drugs, Pena Nieto has hired the respected former head of Colombia's national police, retired Gen. Oscar Naranjo, to be an outside adviser to the security Cabinet that has yet to be named.

Naranjo has offered no hints of any proposals he has for Mexico, however, and that has brought skepticism about whether he will be able to influence decisions from outside the Cabinet and the military chain of command.

"Naranjo is not going to play any significant role whatsoever. He's a PR stunt," Hope said. "He's going to write a couple of papers and give a couple of conferences."

One brake on Pena Nieto's power will be his unexpected small margin of victory, winning roughly 38 percent of the presidential vote for a less than seven point lead over leftist Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador. Also, the PRI won't have a majority in either house of Congress.

A similar situation hampered Calderon's ability to push through Congress his proposed structural reforms for Mexican law enforcement. But some experts think Pena Nieto's political skills will allow him to get legal changes.

"He has skills that Calderon didn't. He has first-rate operators and he's a first-rate political operator," said Luis Rubio, president of the Center for Development Research, an independent think tank.

Wildfire crews hoping for calmer weather

Firefighters battling wildfires in the West were hoping a holiday of calmer winds and higher humidity would help efforts against scores of fires burning across the region.

At the same time, authorities were keeping a nervous eye out for fireworks and other hazards.

A wildfire in Wyoming grew to 137 square miles Wednesday in Medicine Bow National Forest. The fire was only 25 percent contained.

Firefighters in Colorado Springs, Colo., were hoping to push toward full containment of the most destructive blaze in state history, the Waldo Canyon Fire. It was 80 percent contained Wednesday.

From wildfire disaster to Fourth of July extravaganza
Lightning, trains and guns blamed for wildfires

The forecast wasn't as kind in Montana, where a 380-square-mile fire near the town of Lame Creek was listed with "extreme" growth potential on Wednesday, with winds up to 45 mph predicted.

Busted Fitness Myths | Biosanes Health & Nutrition

Here are a few fitness facts that you may have thought to be true. ?Lucky for you, we were able to clear the water.

10 Fitness Myths:

1. ?Looking fit? does not mean you ?are fit.??

You know the people. The ones with the fitness-magazine workout bodies that look better than they actually function. You will be far better off with a simple 4 minute workout of Tabata squats. No added weight ? just body. Being ?fit? should give a person relative high performance across a broad spectrum of physical attributes including strength, endurance, balance, flexibility, and coordination.

2.?Women get bulky from lifting weights.?

Women can not get big and bulky for one reason: their bodies don?t produce enough testosterone to build large bulky muscles.? Testosterone is a key ingredient to putting on muscle mass, and the only way women can get this type of big bulky look is by taking steroids and hormone injections. Thus, explaining bulky female body builders.?So don?t be afraid to lift heavy weights ladies! Lifting heavy will make you strong, not manly.

3. To get rid of belly fat, do crunches.?

It seems like they would, but lets just think about it. ?In a broad sense, burning fat is a factor of expending more calories than you take in. ?The problem with crunches is that they take the body through a small range of motion, which doesn?t burn many calories. ?Instead, try boosting your?metabolism?with muscle-building resistance training. ?This will get you the abs you want and without doing one crunch.

4. Long distance running = optimum weight loss

If you are going to run to lose weight, put your efforts in to sprints. ?Sprint for 100 ? 200 meters then walk for 100 meters, and repeat the cycle until you feel like it is impossible to continue. ?Be sure to push yourself! ?Again, its all about boosting your metabolism into a fat burning machine. ?To get your desired results you sometimes have to take your body to an uncomfortable exertion level. ?Just jogging on the street, treadmill, or etiptical is inefficient and?inadequate.

5. Yoga?s main?benefit?is becoming lean.?

If you are going start practicing yoga, be sure to know the true?benefits. ?Yoga drastically improves balance, static strength, breath work, and is by far some of the best flexibility training you can put yourself through. ?As far as becoming more lean goes, yoga is just as effective as any other physical activity that burns calories. ?Just be sure that you are really pushing yourself during the work phase or your workout in order to maximize your metabolism.

6. When you are trying to build muscle, do three sets of ten repetitions.?

Many people think that the best program for muscle building is to go and hit the lifting machines: three sets of ten reps. Maybe you learned it from a friend or an old coach?regardless, try to unlearn it. ?This formula is great for beginners, but the fact is there is no best program because there are too many factors that change from person to person. ?Do some research and find the program that best suits you and pushes you to your maximum potential.

7. Avoid the dangerous ?deadlift? and ?squat.?

By utilizing?proper technique and being aware of the proper load, you can minimize your chance of injury. ?These are natural movements that we go through every day, be it by picking something up off the floor (deadlift) or by standing up from a seated position (squat). The proper technique will give you proper skeletal alignment which reduces injury. ?As always, use a load that is appropriate for your level of?fitness.

8. ?Supplements are all you need to get in shape.

Supplements complete or enhance an already nutritious diet, and should be treated as such. ?Supplements that are worth while include a good multi-vitamin, an omega-3 supplement (if you are unable to include it in your diet), Optinol fiber, Natural Magic, and Lose-It Advantage.

9. The best way to lift is by targeting specific muscle groups.

The world is never going to give you a ?quad-only? kind of day. ?Your body moves as a fluid single entity so treat it that way. ?Focus on resistance training and full body movements such as deadlifts, power cleans, and presses. Whether you are trying get stronger or lose weight,?these will give you the results you want to see.

10. Machines are safer than free weights?

Machines fool you into thinking that you are stronger than you truly are. ?They force you into a range of motion that is unnatural, ?thus depriving you of your chance to develop posture, stabilizing muscles, as well as balance. ?The chance of skeletal and?muscular?injuries are a risk for any physical activity (free weights or machine), so don?t let the machine dupe you!

(Santa Barbara, Calif.) The world has gotten smaller and more accessible since applications like Google Earth became mainstream, says UC Santa Barbara Professor of Geography Michael Goodchild. However, there is still a long way to go, and there are important steps to take to get there. His perspective, shared with many co-authors around the world, has been published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences in a paper titled, "Next-generation Digital Earth."

Based on former vice-president Al Gore's 1992 vision of a digital replica of Earth, the paper examines the world's progress to date, and its prospects for the future.

"The point of this paper is to say, 'Well, how far did we get?'" said first author Goodchild, who specializes in geographic information systems (GIS). The answer? Since Google Earth the most popular publicly available program for spinning the digital globe not far enough.

Taken from Gore's vision, which outlined in his 1992 book, "Earth in the Balance," and also taken from a Gore speech Goodchild helped to produce for the opening of the California Science Center in 1998, the development of the first iteration of a Digital Earth was rapid, as technology expanded to allow users to view the Earth in a way that had not been possible before. The results fascinated many, who took to maps made by Google and other digital globe-making services NASA's WorldWind and Microsoft's Bing Maps, for instance to visualize their worlds. Global visualizations and modeling have been responsible for a variety of beneficial efforts, such as the tracking of major weather events and political uprisings, and finding lost people.

But the wider the technology spread, the more obvious certain issues became. For instance, different sources of data provided for these applications resulted in different maps, and different boundaries for the same regions.

"There's no such thing as a true map," said Goodchild, pointing out three versions of the boundaries of the Himalayas on Google Maps, in response to requests from the United States, China, and India. Differences in how the applications measure distance are magnified with each new location mapped. These are issues that could make information from digital globes unreliable, even contentious.

Goodchild sees the next generation of Digital Earth moving away from the top-down experience and giving way to the bottom-up perspective.

"I'm more keen on the next generation going local instead of global," he said. Things that happen to be important to those who live in the area should be part of the area's maps, according to Goodchild, though they may not be the standard political or topographic fare of the traditional globe. Temporal information traffic is an example already in use also proves to be useful and more relevant to users.

"There's more of a social perspective now, and less emphasis on permanent objects," he said.

However, to take the next steps effectively, the next generation of Digital Earth has to back away from the "exaggerated precision" of the current generation, allowing for uncertainty, and also for the various contexts and environments that a Digital Earth is able to access. Relationships and linkages between objects need to be developed and refined, and a way of archiving the sheer amounts of data must be developed, says the paper.

Additionally, according to the paper, collaboration between multiple infrastructures and open-source partnerships will be necessary for the next generation Digital Earth, as well as a code of ethics that will allow the technology to strike a balance between universal access and universal protection.

"Privacy is less important to the younger generation," said Goodchild, pointing to things like Facebook and similar social media engines, "but we need the ability to opt-out or be invisible. It's getting increasingly difficult."

Despite the move away from ultra-high precision in mapping, however, there continues to be an overarching need for the next generation Digital Earth to be scientifically accurate, and it's the scientific community's job to ensure that accuracy, he said.

"It's the problem we have when major corporations produce scientific software," Goodchild said, citing Google Earth's inclination to satisfy 90 percent of its users. Scientists are part of the remaining 10 percent, he said.

"We ought to insist that scientific standards should be followed," said Goodchild. "Because if we don't, they won't."

Iraq Violence: Bombs Kill 4, Judge Shot As Attacks Grind On

BAGHDAD -- Bombers killed four people in two Iraqi cities and gunmen assassinated a judge, officials said Sunday, as al-Qaida's affiliate ramped up attacks six months after the last U.S. troops withdrew.

Three coordinated bomb attacks within minutes of each other Sunday morning hit the central city of Tikrit, 130 kilometers (80 miles) north of Baghdad, a provincial official said. A civilian walking by was killed and two others were wounded.

The bombs went off near a middle school where students were taking exams, but authorities said none of the students was hurt.

Further south, three policemen died when a suicide car bomb and three roadside bombs exploded at a security checkpoint on Saturday night in Samarra, 95 kilometers (60 miles) north of Baghdad, a police official said.

The bombing Saturday night raised the death toll for June to at least 237, the second-bloodiest month since U.S. troops withdrew from Iraq in mid-December.

In the northern city of Mosul, gunmen killed criminal court judge Abdul-Latif Mohammed in a drive-by shooting as he was returning home from work, police said. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to release the information.

Government officials and security forces are among the chief targets of al-Qaida-affiliated insurgents, who experts say have been emboldened by political feuding that has paralyzed the government and are hoping to reignite fighting among the country's ethnic and sectarian factions.

More significant than the numbers was the fact that insurgents appeared able to sustain the level of violence over a longer period than before.

There was a major bombing or shooting rampage almost every three days in June, many targeting Shiite pilgrims on their way to the annual Baghdad commemoration of a revered imam. Shiites are also often targeted by the extremist Sunni insurgency.

Another Shiite pilgrimage set for this week has security forces on high alert.

Hundreds of thousands of pilgrims are expected to travel to the holy city of Karbala, 80 kilometers (50 miles) south of Baghdad, for the festival of Shabaniyah, celebrating the birth of the ninth-century Shiite leader known as the Hidden Imam. The pilgrimage peaks on Friday.

(AP) ? Fabian Cancellara of Switzerland won the Tour de France prologue for a fifth time on Saturday, beating title hopeful Bradley Wiggins of Britain by seven seconds.

"What a great opening ? again!" said Cancellara.

France's Sylvain Chavanel was third, also 7 seconds back, after the winding 4-mile time trial in Liege.

Cancellara is unquestionably the world's best time-trial rider, but the veteran isn't considered a Tour contender because he, unlike Wiggins, often struggles in the mountains.

Cadel Evans of Australia began his title defense in 13th place, 17 seconds behind Cancellara.

"I did the most I could. It's not always easy. I always do the maximum," Cancellara said after winning in 7 minutes, 13 seconds. "It's a great feeling and this certainly takes some of the pressure off."

All of Cancellara's prologue victories have been outside France. The first came in the same Belgian city in 2004, when he beat seven-time Tour winner Lance Armstrong by 2 seconds, then in London in 2007, Monaco in 2009, and Rotterdam in 2010.

At the first time check, around the midway point, he led Chavanel by one second then accelerated to the finish.

Wiggins, a three-time Olympic champion who is hoping to become the first Briton to win the Tour, said going into the prologue that Cancellara was "the best in the world" when it comes to time trials.

"I finished second, so that's a good thing," said Wiggins. "Physically I felt fantastic. I didn't take any major risk because there were a lot of tricky sections."

Evans, too, said he'd expected to be outclassed in the short prologue, and put his ride into a broader perspective.

"Not good, but not bad," the Australian said. "Of course I'd rather concede less seconds, you never want to lose time ... I've got one (general classification) rider ahead of me, but I was kind of half-expecting that. Wiggins, what his background is, is these short efforts."

"For me the real racing starts tomorrow," Evans added. "I'm just happy to get it going, and looking forward to some good racing. ... It's like 6 kilometers out of 3,500 or so, so in that regard it's a small comparison."

The Tour start offered a welcome return to racing ? three weeks of criss-crossing France, nosing into Switzerland and scaling climbs in the Alps and Pyrenees before the July 22 finish on Paris' Champs-Elysees.

Despite jittery first-day nerves, only a few riders ran into mishaps. Tony Martin, the reigning world time trial champion, was the day's highest-profile casualty. The German rider got a flat tire, raised his hand to his team staffers, and had to change bikes ? and crossed 15 seconds back of Chavanel, who was leading up to that point.

Promising young Slovak rider Peter Sagan briefly skipped off the road and lost time.

The victory offered a bright spot for Cancellara's RadioShack Nissan Trek team, which is without its leader Andy Schleck of Luxembourg ? sidelined by a spinal injury sustained in the Criterium du Dauphine this month. The team is also without manager Johan Bruyneel, who's been listed in a U.S. Anti-Doping Agency case also focusing on Armstrong. Bruyneel chose to stay away so as not to be a distraction.

In a further embarrassment, Enrico Carpani, a spokesman for cycling governing body UCI, said it received information from several RadioShack riders that they had faced delays in receiving some salary payments. RadioShack spokesman Philippe Maertens said he believed they had been paid, "and if not, there is a reason for it." He called it a "private issue."

Brushing aside the team's issues, Cancellara said he was focusing "on what I have to do ? and that's riding my bike." He said the victory, which he dedicated to his pregnant wife, was doubly rewarding because he broke his collarbone in the Tour of Flanders in April and wasn't sure he'd be at his best for the Tour prologue.

As defending champion, Evans had the honor of riding last among the 198 competitors who rolled down the starter's ramp for the race against the clock in the cycling-crazed city, where untold thousands of fans lined the route.

Sunday's first stage takes riders over a mostly flat, 123-mile loop from Liege to the nearby town of Seraing.
