He and other researchers scored the severity of the patients? psoriasis based on precise measurements of skin affected by the hallmark red plaques. A successful drug reduces a patient?s severity score by 75 percent.

All volunteers had had moderate to severe psoriasis affecting at least 10 percent of their bodies for six months. In one of the studies, Leonardi and his colleagues randomly assigned 142 patients to receive either ixekizumab or a placebo. In the other, 198 patients got brodalumab or placebo. In both studies, drugs and placebo were delivered as several injections spaced over 12 to 16 weeks, using various doses.

Both drugs reduced the psoriasis severity score by 75 percent in about four-fifths of patients getting a medium to high dose of either drug.

The drugs thwart the immune protein interleukin-17. In most people this protein plays a productive role, fending off bacterial and fungal infections, Blauvelt says. But people with psoriasis overproduce interleukin-17, which induces activation and growth of the outer-layer skin cells that make keratin. Only long-term testing, some of which is already under way, will establish that interleukin-17 activity can be suppressed by these new drugs indefinitely without risk of infection, Blauvelt says.?

Each study was funded by the drug?s manufacturer. Eli Lilly makes ixekizumab, and Amgen makes brodalumab.

Blauvelt says the new results compare favorably with previous early-stage studies of drugs that also target immune system proteins implicated in psoriasis. Some of these drugs have reached pharmacy shelves as etanercept (Enbrel), adalimumab (Humira) and ustekinumab (Stelara).

The last 10 years have seen ?a very profound shift in the approach to treatment of psoriasis,? says dermatologist Kim Papp of Probity Medical Research, in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, and coauthor of the brodalumab study.

HONOLULU (AP) ? A submarine that will take "Titanic" director James Cameron to the Earth's deepest point has made a successful unmanned test dive.

Cameron tells National Geographic News that his specially designed submarine called Deepsea Challenger completed the nearly 7-mile test dive Wednesday. The team returned to calmer waters and was headed back to the site Saturday.

If all goes well, he'll spend about six hours exploring and filming the bottom of the Mariana Trench, about 200 miles southwest of the Pacific island of Guam.

Swiss engineer Jacques Piccard and U.S. Navy Capt. Don Walsh are the only other men to reach the spot. They spent about 20 minutes there during their 1960 dive but couldn't see much after their sub kicked up sand from the sea floor.

Look Past Immediate Concerns, China Remains The Biggest Bullish Influence On Commodities

Nearly two years ago we took a look at "A Little Trouble in Big China," as China's economy was showing signs of slowing. Six hundred and seventy-six days later, signs of slowing are emerging once again, leaving global financial markets to be twitchy and pundits to question whether the engine room of the global economy is heading for a soft or hard landing (soft = landing on both feet; hard = a humpty dumpty-style ending). So here are some key reference points to consider when assessing China, from both an economic and energy perspective.

1) It has been due in part to the weakness in property prices that the latest bout of bearishness towards China has been kick-started. Latest data show house prices in 45 of 70 cities fell last month, while 22 cities saw prices stay the same. (caveat: the government has been on a two-year campaign to rein in escalating house prices).

2) Another contributing factor to rising concerns about China has been due to the adjustment lower of their economic growth target from 8% to 7.5% - the first time it has been moved since 2005. That said, although this news was taken very warily by markets, the reality is that a slower growth target is indicative of a developed (as opposed to a developing) country - a hat-tip towards what China is becoming.

3) 7.5% growth is none too shabby. Based on this rate, it is still startling the vast share of global consumption that China will make up: be it of raw materials, agriculture, or energy:

4) China also has a strong hand when it comes to natural resources. One issue that is causing increasing concern on a global scale is that China controls 97% of the world's rare earth metals. Rare earth metals are 17 minerals which are used in key elements of manufacturing (they are used in iPads ... need I say more?!), and China holds all the cards on this front (giving them a political bargaining chip).

5) China has the largest global reserves of shale gas (as the graphic on this post shows), and is looking to ramp up domestic production, targeting 6.5 Bcm (= 230 Bcf) by by 2015.

6) Given the extent of these reserves, China has spent the last few years piling money into foreign energy mergers, acquisitions, and joint ventures to cut their teeth on new technologies then take them home (to the tune of $50 billion in the last two years, hark above). Sinopec has been investing in U.S. gas shale while CNOOC seeks to invest more on this front, while Petrochina has been investing in Canadian oil sands. Reciprocal arrangements are springing up, with just this week Total SA striking a deal with Sinopec to explore shale plays in China, while Shell has just signed the first production-sharing contract for shale gas in China.

7) China is both the largest producer and consumer of coal in the world, with approximately 70% of its energy consumption met by the fuel.

8) Economic data, although slowing, is showing strength. Industrial production is up 11.4%% versus last year, while retail sales are up 14.7%. Manufacturing, however, is expanding by the smallest of margins, adding to concerns of a slowdown.

9) Although there is no disputing that the Chinese economy is slowing, the government is being proactive about trying to orchestrate a soft landing. Just yesterday it slashed reserve requirements for agricultural banks so they can increase lending to rural communities. The reserve requirement ratio has already been cut this year for all banks in an attempt to stimulate lending, and hence, the economy, and will likely be cut again.

10) China's auto sales are set to reach 30 million a year by 2020 as the country becomes less reliant on exports, and more driven by domestic demand. By way of a comparison, auto sales in the U.S. have just hit a 4-yr high at 15 million. The population difference and the closing of the wealth gap explain this away ... U.S. population = 311 million, China = 1,388 million. And as another reference, car production in China is going bonkers too, according to BHP Billiton (BHP):

11) Finally, China is the second largest oil consumer in the world (behind the U.S.), but is likely to become the largest at some point mid-next decade, as robust annual demand growth continues, while U.S. oil demand growth stagnates.

?Two years on, and the analogy in the first post to Brangelina still holds true: we cannot believe the hype or truly know whether everything is as rosy as it seems, but the fact that the two still appear to be strong (Brangelina and China, that is), indicates they are doing something right.

Leader of 'Kony' video group to focus on health

SAN DIEGO (AP) ? Jason Russell may be the most public face of Invisible Children, the nonprofit group he co-founded to stop African war atrocities. He narrates a 30-minute video on warlord Joseph Kony that went viral on the Internet.

Less than two weeks after the video's smashing success, Invisible Children is facing the prospect of carrying on without Russell ? at least for a while. He was briefly detained by police and hospitalized after witnesses saw him running through streets in his underwear, screaming and banging his fists on the pavement.

Danica Russell said late Friday that her husband "did some irrational things brought on by extreme exhaustion and dehydration." She denied that alcohol or drug use triggered the behavior.

"We thought a few thousand people would see the film, but in less than a week, millions of people around the world saw it. While that attention was great for raising awareness about Joseph Kony, it also brought a lot of attention to Jason and, because of how personal the film is, many of the attacks against it were also very personal, and Jason took them very hard," she said.

"On our end, the focus remains only on his health, and protecting our family. We'll take care of Jason, you take care of the work," her statement continued. "The message of the film remains the same: stop at nothing."

San Diego police dispatcher transcripts show neighbors began calling around 11:30 a.m. Thursday to report that a man was running around in his underwear in the city's Pacific Beach neighborhood.

"(Subject) is at the corner, banging his hands on the ground, screaming, incoherent," the transcript says. "People are trying to calm him down, he's been stopping traffic."

Police Lt. Andra Brown said a 33-year-old man was taken to a hospital for medical evaluation. He was never arrested, and no charges are planned.

"At this point, the police department's involvement in the matter is done," Brown said.

Russell, a San Diego native and graduate of the University of Southern California's film school, narrates the video, which has been viewed more than 80 million times on YouTube. In the video, Russell talks to his young son, Gavin, about Kony and the Lord's Resistance Army.

Gavin's birth is shown at the beginning of the film. At one point, the boy sums up what his dad does for a living.

"You stop the bad guys from being mean," he says.

At the video's conclusion Russell says, "At the end of my life I want to say that the world we left behind is one Gavin can be proud of, one that doesn't allow Joseph Konys and child soldiers."

Gavin replies: "I'm going to be like you dad. I'm going to come with you to Africa."

The video's overnight success has brought heightened scrutiny to the San Diego-based nonprofit over its tactics, governance and spending practices.

The group has been criticized for not spending enough directly on the people it intends to help and for oversimplifying the 26-year-old conflict involving the LRA and its leader, Kony, a bush fighter wanted by the International Criminal Court for crimes against humanity.

The group acknowledged the video overlooked many nuances but said it was a "first entry point" that puts the conflict "in an easily understandable format."

Ben Keesey, chief executive officer, released a video on Monday to respond to questions about the group's finances, including the amount of money it spends on travel and operations. He said money that directly benefits the cause accounted for more than 80 percent of its spending from 2007 to 2011.

"I understand why a lot of people are wondering, 'Is this just some slick, kind of fly-by-night, slacktivist thing?' when actually it's not at all," Keesey said. "It's connected to a really deep, thoughtful, very intentional and strategic campaign."

Charity Navigator gives Invisible Children two out of four stars for accountability and transparency. The watchdog group says organizations should have at least five independent members on their boards of directors. Invisible Children has four, though it plans to add one this year.

Russell co-founded Invisible Children in 2005 and is its highest-paid employee, making $89,669 a year. He is also on the six-member board of directors, with Keesey.

Keesey, who oversees the business side of the organization while Russell makes films, said Friday that the last two weeks have taken a "severe emotional toll on all of us, Jason especially."

"Jason's passion and his work have done so much to help so many, and we are devastated to see him dealing with this personal health issue," Keesey said.

Obama strings 5 fundraisers in 2 cities in 1 day

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama is embarking on a concentrated one-day fundraising trip, with a stop in his hometown of Chicago and another in Atlanta for a big-draw event with film producer Tyler Perry and performer Cee Lo Green.

Obama has been increasing his fundraising pace in preparation for his showdown with a Republican presidential nominee.

Obama will attend two fundraisers in Chicago and three in Atlanta. In Atlanta, his campaign's African American Leadership Council is holding a gala at Perry's studio featuring Green's performance. General admission tickets are $500. VIP tickets range from $2,500 to $10,000. A dinner later at Perry's home will raise $35,800 per guest.

The money is split between the campaign and the Democratic National Committee.

Obama will be in Chicago just ahead of Tuesday's Illinois Republican primary.

Science Life Blog ...</a> </h3> <div class='post-header'> <div class='post-header-line-1'></div> </div> <div class='post-body entry-content' id='post-body-804286924545685989' itemprop='description articleBody'> <p><em>By Matt Wood</em></p> <p>The South By Southwest Interactive (SXSW) conference is best known as an annual gathering place for tech geeks. Each year thousands converge in Austin, Texas, to schmooze with the digerati and attend panel discussions on mobile computing, social networking, gaming and whatever else is buzzing on the Internet at the time.</p> <p><img alt="logo_sxswi_2012" class="alignright size-full wp-image-7455" height="158" src="http://sciencelife.uchospitals.edu/wp-content/uploads/logo_sxswi_2012.gif" title="logo_sxswi_2012" width="338" />The world of health care IT has been largely absent from these conversations in the past. This year, however, spurred by the impending changes from the Affordable Care Act, skyrocketing costs and general frustration at the complexity of the system, creative entrepreneurs set their sights on health care in a series of SXSW discussions that looked at the digital future of medicine.</p> <p>For the first time, this year?s conference included a dedicated health-and-education track. One of the first panels, featuring speakers from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), the White House and NASA, addressed the role of prize competitions in solving science problems. Government agencies, along with nonprofit organizations like the X PRIZE Foundation, are sponsoring contests in which teams compete to solve complex scientific problems. This method of ?crowdsourcing? allows these groups to reach beyond the usual circle of researchers to find novel solutions to problems and target ambitious goals without large R&D investments up-front. One example is the current X PRIZE competition that will award $10 million to the team that can develop a Star Trek-like ?tricorder,? or mobile device that can monitor and diagnose health conditions.</p> <p>Other panels fit more into the general entrepreneurial vibe of SXSW. One of the themes running through all of these discussions was the opportunity presented by the growing amount of data generated by electronic health care records, insurance claims and genetic sequencing. One such session, ?The Future of Digital Health,? featured startups building tools to help people track medical expenses, access their medical records on the web and post health questions online where experts can provide verified answers.</p> <p>Generally absent from these startup-focused panels was serious discussion of privacy and risk of data breaches. But some tried to tackle privacy concerns and legal issues that arise when health care collides with social media. One focused on the role of online review sites like Yelp as more patients search for information online to choose a physician. This presents a particular quandary for physicians because they can?t respond to reviews publicly to challenge unfair claims and misinformation.</p> <p>While consumers usually think of Yelp as a place to find out about restaurants and hotels, Vince Sollitto, Yelp?s vice president for corporate communications and government affairs, said the website was originally created to provide reviews of physicians. He said that while 80 percent of reviews on Yelp are positive, a seemingly unfair review could be countered by a physician through a private message to other users. He also suggested that physicians use Yelp to post information about their practice proactively to counter potential misinformation, much like Ves Dimov, MD, an allergist at the Unviersity of Chicago Medicine, suggested in a recent post about filtering medical information online.</p> <p><span id="more-7454"></span><br />There were also multiple panels on social networking and its tricky role in health care. During each of these discussions observers could sense a palpable frustration at why consumers can communicate so easily with each other online but can?t do the same with doctors and insurers. One panel even began with a physician, a representative from Aetna and the founder of a social network for patients acting out a scene in which a patient tries to email his doctor a picture of a suspicious-looking mole. The scene played on the comedy of the situation, complete with a plugged-in patient expecting his physician to diagnose him on a cell phone while a mysterious insurer lurked behind a curtain like the Wizard of Oz, deciding which claims he would pay.</p> <p>Another panel addressed how pharmaceutical companies can overcome the ?creepiness factor? of reaching out to potential customers via social media. This was one of the more charged discussions, because while patients genuinely want to get information from these companies through social media, they also don?t want to feel that companies are capitalizing on their illness. As Alicia Staley, a cancer survivor and CEO of a cancer advocacy group told a representative from Sanofi-Aventis, ?Your business strategy is my life.?</p> <p>Some of the better examples of how online media can transform health care came through the creative use of video. In a panel on how hospitals can use technology to connect better with patients, Angelo Volandes, MD, an internist from Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital, talked about a study in which he used videos to facilitate end-of-life discussions with terminal cancer patients. By watching videos of how different types of care would look, they felt better able to make decisions about how much care they wanted to receive. He now works with a nonprofit organization that produces such videos for other types of end-of-life care.</p> <p>Perhaps the most positive example of entrepreneurs using the Internet to change the way Americans think about health came from an unlikely source. Feel Rich is a website created by music producer Quincy Jones III (son of the legendary Quincy Jones Jr.) that uses videos to promote a healthy lifestyle to urban teenagers. But instead of shilling products or gimmicky workout routines, the videos feature famous rappers such as Paul Wall, Fat Joe, Slim Thug and NORE showing off their routines to lose weight, eat healthy and stay in shape.</p> <p>Wall and his wife talked about growing up in homes where they never learned portion control or how to shop for healthy food. The videos show how kids can incorporate dance into exercise routines and work out without fancy equipment or gym memberships. The site connects kids with fitness trainers who encourage them on Twitter, and the company is working with Michelle Obama?s Let?s Move campaign to promote its message.</p> <p>If some of the entrepreneurs at SXSW seemed a little too focused on the moneymaking opportunities in health care, projects such as Feel Rich, Volandes? video study and the various prize competitions showed the kind of positive changes possible when creative minds apply themselves to health and fitness. SXSW has long been an incubator for groundbreaking tech ideas. U.S. <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1331633116_0">Defense Secretary Leon Panetta</span> is meeting with Kyrgyzstan's leaders to stress that America needs the continued use of the U.S. air base there beyond the end of its contract in 2014, largely as a <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1331633116_4">transit center</span> to bring troops home from <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1331633116_2">Afghanistan</span>.</p><p>A senior U.S. official traveling with Panetta to Kyrgyzstan said the U.S. believes there may be some "wiggle room" for additional negotiations for a longer term contract.</p><p>The official said the defense chief on Tuesday will underscore the importance of the transit center for both countries, for regional security as well as the possible transition to a lucrative commercial hub in the future. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitive nature of the discussions.</p><p><span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1331633116_5">Kyrgyzstan President Almaz Atambayev</span> has insisted that the lease will expire in June 2014, and U.S. officials say negotiations on extending the pact have not begun. Atambayev has said the existence of the base leaves the former Soviet Central Asian nation vulnerable to retaliatory strikes over U.S. military action in the region.</p><p>The base has been the subject of much contentious dispute between the two countries. But in 2009 the U.S. was able to reach an agreement with the Kyrgyz government for use of the base in return for $60 million a year.</p><p>Right now all the U.S. troops moving in and out of Afghanistan travel through what's called the Manas Transit Center. Large numbers of troops are set to come home in 2014 as the war winds down.</p><p>In addition, Manas handles a substantial amount of the air-to-air refueling missions for jet fighters during Afghanistan war operations.</p><p>The transit of personnel and supplies in and out of Afghanistan has become problematic for the U.S., leaving Kyrgyzstan as one of the few remaining key routes.</p><p>In addition to the vital air transport role, Kyrgyzstan is one of just a few ground routes that the U.S. can use to ferry supplies into Afghanistan.</p><p>Pakistan shut down its ground supply routes after U.S. airstrikes in November killed a number of Pakistani troops. Since then the U.S. has had to increase its use of ground routes through the central Asian countries. The high-speed rail route through Russia, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan handles the bulk of the ground supplies, but some trucks go through more mountainous routes in Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan.</p><p>Prior to the 2009 agreement the U.S. was paying a little more than $17 million a year for the use of Manas.</p><p>According to Pentagon statistics, there were about 4,800 refueling flights out of Manas for the <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1331633116_3">Afghanistan war</span> in 2011, with at least 24,000 aircraft receiving fuel totaling roughly 300 million pounds. The app is called <a href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/acl-archive/id461125484?mt=8">ACL Archive</a>, and it comes from Austin City Limits, the public television show that first started in 1976 to showcase live performances. I was actually a fan of the show when I was a teenager ? or, as I told general manager Tom Gimbel, back when I had a television.
